The Wakkerstroom Area
Nestled in a quiet valley with the Balele mountains to the south, the area surrounding Wakkerstroom is mountainous with kloofs, mountain springs, over 700 hectares of wetland area, dams, conservation and heritage sites. It is internationally remowned as a “birders paradise” with seven endemic bird species and over 300 regularly seen species. As Wakkerstroom was occupied by the British during the First Boer War, remains of the Staffordshire and Dragoon encampments can be found on the slopes of Ossewakop and Voortrekker passes south of the town. During the Second Boer War, the British built blockhouses between Wakkerstroom , Volksrust and Piet Retief to protect the supply line from Durban.
Wakkerstroom plays host to an annual music festival, arts and crafts fair, mountain bike competitions and many more events advertised as they come along.

Our
Self-catering
Houses
Our two houses, Mahem and Crowned Crane View, are situated a short 5 minute walk away from the Wakkerstroom main village.
Magnificent views of rolling hills and the 700 ha Wetland with it’s abundance of birdlife, make for the perfect morning coffee and afternoon sundowners as you immediately unwind.
Both houses are spacious and yet warming and are perfect for couples, families or groups. Both properties are pet friendly and pet secure with fencing on all sides.
It is suggested that guests bring their own alcoholic beverages along as while there is liquor available at Grasslands Butchery, the stock is very limited.
However, there are shops to accommodate any grocery requirements and we would love guests to support these privately owned enterprises. There is a butcher, Fruit and Vegetable shop, Bakery, Deli’s, a cheese shop and general dealers within the village and the prices are reasonable.
The butchery and general dealer are closed on Sundays. There are 2 ATM’s in town, a Standard Bank ATM by the Total Garage and an FNB ATM inside Terrazo Supermarket.
